A Christian brother gave us a parable. People like to watch soccer match in live because the atmosphere and the audience around you give you a wonderful feeling. In contrast, sitting at home watching soccer match is too different. You can imagine how excited you would be if you could match the world cup final in live!
I couldn't say any of the above reasons is totally wrong. Each of them explains why Christian go to church. However, they can not capture the whole picture. Church is not a place that makes you godly because the one makes you godly is Jesus. It is not only a place to make friends and gathering. It is not the only place for you to praise God because you yourself is the temple that should serve the Lord every moment in your life. It is not the closest place to talk to God because He promises that He is always with us not matter where we are.
I think the soccer match parable is a very good example. However watching the match in live is more than just enjoying the environment. The excitement you will get is more than just 'watch'. You can contribute. You can contribute into the match in the sense that you may boost the morale of your favourite team by cheering as loud as you can. In the same way, going to church is not just about getting the good things out of the church. Being a Christian means that you are a part of the family in Christ. We are brothers and sisters serving the Heavenly Father. Therefore, going to church is also about giving and contributing into the family. Everyone play a different role in the family. Some are talented in music, therefore sing hymns and write songs. Some are more proactive in making new friends, therefore they serve the people who are new to church.
We are different part of the same body.
1 Corinthians 12: 12-13
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—andall were made to drink of one Spirit.
